Kempegowda International Airport Bangalore

Kempegowda International Airport is the main serving international airport of Bangalore. It is located in Devanahalli, North Bangalore, and is spread over 4,000 acres. It was opened in the year 2008 and has 2 terminals. The airport is about 35 Km away from the locality of Devanahalli and serves the entire city. It was named after King Kempegowda I and is a public-private consortium. The airport has a footfall of about 37.5 million people every year. It is famous because it is also the 1st solar powered airport and is one of the most beautiful airports in the world. Its exact address is North Bangalore, Karnataka, pin code 534320. History of KIAB

KIA was built in 2008 to manage the city's growing air traffic. Earlier, the HAL Airport was serving but became too small for the city's needs.
KIAB is named after the founder of the city, Kempegowda, known for building the city.
It offers world-class facilities like shopping, dining, lounges etc. There are automated systems for check-in and baggage handling, making it convenient for travelers.
Today, it is among the busiest airports in India, handling over 30 million passengers annually.

It welcomes both domestic and international routes and is a major hub for airlines like Indigo, Air India, and Vistara. This airport continues to evolve and play a key role in connecting Bangalore to the world.

Ownership

The KIAB is operated and managed by the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL). It is a public-private partnership that balances the working. The ownership structure is divided as follows:

Fairfax India Holdings Corporation: Holds the majority stake of 54%. It is a company based in Canada.
Siemens Project Ventures: Owns 20% of the shares.
Government of Karnataka: Holds 13% of the stake.
Airports Authority of India (AAI): Owns the remaining 13%.

Terminals

The KIAB houses 2 terminals, T1 and T2, where T1 is domestic and T2 is international.

About Terminal 1

Terminal 1 is a single, grand terminal dedicated to domestic flights, covering an area of 150,556 m². It is capable of handling up to 20 million passengers annually. It also houses 2 lounges to give a comfortable space to the flyers. These lounges showcase local art and culture to the travelers. Also, there is a separate VIP lounge covering 930 m² for exclusive use.

Since Sept 12, 2023, T1 now only handles domestic flights. The airlines operating from Terminal 1 include IndiGo, Akasa Air, Alliance Air, and SpiceJet. All flights from other countries have been moved to Terminal 2.

About Terminal 2

The T2 of KIAB was inaugurated on Nov 11, 2022, by PM Modi and began operations in Jan 2023. Its build costs around Rs 5,000 crore and spans 255,000 sq.m. It increases the airport's capacity by 25 million passengers per year. There are also plans for a 2nd phase expected to add another 20 million passengers annually. It opened for domestic flights on Jan 15, 2023, and on Sept 12, 2023, it started handling all international flights.

The Kempegowda Airport has become the 3rd busiest airport in India and is the 25th in Asia. It ranks in the 56th position as the busiest airport as per the data of 2023-24.
